DISCUSSION GROUP

Gender and Identity

With Guest Speaker An. Solf

   17 November 2021

We welcome you to join the first in a series of online discussions on Wednesday 17 November 2021 as part of a new collective focusing on the value of the Arts and Humanities. As A&H students and researchers, we believe that our disciplines offer essential and unique tools to explore the most cogent issues of our time. We propose to meet to discuss the most pressing issues of the moment, through which we wish to explore how critical thinking can provide positive solutions to seemingly insurmountable societal schisms.

This discussion will be led by guest speaker An. Solf and will focus on current debates on gender theory and gender identity through a reading of two short texts by Lann Hornscheidt and Paul B. Preciado. Hornscheidt asks what role the categorisation of people through language plays in the perpetuation of violence in society. Preciado proposes to fight against the normalised binarism embedded within academic disciplines.

As this is our first meeting, there will also be the opportunity to shape the direction of this forum.
